POST-OPERATIVE PHALLOPLASTY INSTRUCTIONS

1. Have the prescriptions given to you by Dr. Capriotti filled prior to surgery. Begin taking the medication prescribed as directed after your surgery.

2. After surgery, the penis will be wrapped with either brown tape or Coban. This should stay on for 7-8 days. The patient will then continue to rewrap the penis with Coban (2-3 layers) daily for 1 month to keep the penis from “telescoping”and clumping the fat.

3. Dr. Capriotti will change the operative dressing the day after surgery and instruct you on further dressing changes as necessary. For lengthening procedures, this usually means redressing the pubic area incision daily for 1 week.

4. On the day after surgery, begin stretching exercises by holding the head of the penis with the thumb and third finger and pulling for 10-15 seconds at a time every 2 hours.

5. On the 6th day after surgery, begin stretching for 3-4 minutes at a time every 2 hours.

6. Two weeks after surgery, begin using the stretching device provided, gradually working up to 2 hours per day. The use of this device is critical for postoperative results because…

a. It prevents the penis from retracting and healing in its original position.

b. Length can gradually be increased for up to 6 months.

c. If fat is used, the device prevents clumping or irregularities through constant tension.

7. No strenuous exercise such as heavy lifting or contact sports for 4 weeks after surgery.

8. Avoid aspirin, vitamin E, or fish oil capsules for 2 weeks after surgery.

9. You may resume sexual activity after 6 weeks if you have had girth enlargement or 4 weeks for just lengthening.

10. Postoperative pain is usually minimal. Some bruising and swelling are normal and will gradually diminish by the 2nd postoperative week. Some pain or discomfort is common after erection for a few days.

11. After the first postoperative visit, you are free to go. We will follow your postop course by phone. Please call during normal office hours if you have any questions (9am - 5pm, Central Standard Time).
